Tuxedo Crush

An unlikely look to covet, this spring/summer I am taking wardrobe inspiration from the flamboyantly attired Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein (Robert De Niro’s character in the film Casino). Blazers, tuxedo and boyfriend jackets are my current staple.

Robert De Niro as Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein, in the film Casino. Costumes by John Dunn and Rita Ryack.

Costume Designers Rita Ryack and John Dunn (Dunn more recently acclaimed for his work on the TV series Boardwalk Empire) created  no less than 52 custom suits at the astounding cost of one million US dollars, for De Niro’s character -spanning the lifetime of his career as a casino mogul and ranging from classic to tropical (pictured). It is the latter style that I am particularly interested in, a look fit for 1980s Palm Beach.

Less flamingo pink and more everyday ways to where can be found in the Juju-B Jacket by To Be Adored, a long-line, minimal, slouchy shaped silk creation, featuring bracelet sleeves and a shawl lapel -perfect for the urban safari. Pictured hear with co-coordinating Holly B Trousers, for a poolside look I would team the jacket with TBAs Zoe Jumpsuit.

Band of Outsiders reverse styling of bright jeans and neutral blazer is a great way to wear the current candy colour denim trend. Team skinnys with an equally oversized borrowed it from a member of Wham! or my boyfriend, jacket.

For a tougher alternative I team my Wet Look Leggings by Black Milk with this peach Linen Blazer, Aztec Print Suntop and Anaconda Ankle Boots all by Topshop. Although I was dubious of the quality of this Blazer/Topshop’s tailoring I have not been disappointed. The Blazer is undeniably summery, cut from pale peach linen, it works in-keeping with my desired look when the bracelet length sleeves are rolled up to reveal the contrast lining.

The mint colour variant of the same Topshop Blazer evokes the sleazy rich kid look of James Spader as the character Steff in the John hughes classic ‘Pretty in Pink’.

Henry Holland’s SS11 collection for House of Holland features vivid tropical print jackets in green, purple and aqua hues, this one is my favorite. Limedrop’s digital print Tuxedo Park Jacket gives off a slouchy lounge jacket vibe for a relaxed evening look.

The tuxedo jacket -no wardrobe can ever be complete without one. With that I am as yet to find the perfect one, let’s face it after seeing Phoebe Philo’s past creation for Celine how can anything compare. Harking more to luxe 1970s this doesn’t technically meet the Miami Vice criteria of my present style but while we are on the subject of suit jackets, the tuxedo reigns king. With thoughts of Bryan Ferry on the album cover of ‘Another Time, Another Place’ I endeavor onward in my search.

Noted possibilities include Blazer with Contrast Lapels by ASOS and this eye popping Studio Blazer by ZARA has my heart racing. I would style this look with pointy creepers courtesy of Underground.
